Meta + Pherein

The greek root of the word metaphor comes from "meta" across or over, and "pherein" to carry or bear. Giving the definition of the word metaphor, as to carry from one place to another. The Rock which weights 2.5 kg., illustrates a metaphor both in the literal and figurative sense. The action of carrying the rock, from one place to another, is an exploration on migration and the weight of our own histories, traditions, culture, language, and memories. As many immigrants away from their countries, in my case Mexico, Meta + Pherein represents that personal baggage, that I continually reevaluate to define who I am in the present moment. For 25 years I will carry this rock taken from the Mayan Ruins of Palenque on December 29, 2009. The rock should always remain 50 miles away from my present location, and its journey along will mine will be documented through different mediums.
